Around the end of July of this year, I was texting Kim to let her know I was about a mile away from the Sheraton Inner Harbor. We were meeting up there to talk about the wedding space and photos and things like that. As I was getting close to Pratt St (less than a mile from the hotel) I hit traffic and came to a dead stop. I looked around, and I was surrounded by an incredible amount of Japanimation style characters. Some I knew, like from Street Fighter video game, or Mario, Luigi, others, but most I didn’t. It was a sea of purple, pink, black, homemade “weapons”, costumes – I felt like I was in a movie – it really was pretty amazing. I spent the next hour (late) for Kim, trying to go one more mile to meet her. Once we did meet, the Sheraton was packed with characters too. I had no idea what was going on – but found out it is the annual Otakon Convention in Baltimore, which is a convention all about anime and Asian pop culture. Just see for yourself (costumes start about 10 seconds in):
Ok, let’s get back to the wedding lol -
If you follow the blog, you know about 2 or 3 posts back we spent time with Molly & Mike. Kim was Molly’s MOH a few weeks earlier, and this time Molly was Kim’s MOH. We started off at the very cool Brocatos Hair Salon and then headed over to the Sheraton Inner Harbor where both Kim and Justin were getting ready. Randi, who was the on site coordinator, was there to greet us, and stayed through the entire night. She was super attentive and along with her staff, did a fantastic job coordinating the wedding.
The ceremony went off perfectly, and while I was with Kim and Justin, the ceremony location was opened up and transformed into an amazing reception site. As it was no surprise with this group, the reception was awesome, totally rocking and went until a bit after midnight.
The usual adrenaline surge that follows weddings was a bit dampened on this night, as it was a closing of a chapter for an amazing core group of friends. Back in 2006 I first met some of these friends while shooting Rob & Angie’s wedding in Winston-Salem, NC. Since that time, I have been honored by becoming friends with this amazing group and shooting their weddings. It really is something to see Jimmy floating around in Rob & Angie’s group shot in 2006, and then see Jimmy as Mike’s Best Man in 2010. Or to develop a photo of Dave T in 2008 as a groom, and then develop the same exact photo, same reception pose, all by chance, in 2010. I have looked forward to weddings with this group every year, and every year they delivered. And over time, they’ve become good friends. Justin and Kim were the last of the group to tie the knot, and it was great to see everyone at this wedding. I raise my glass to Justin & Kim, Mike & Molly, Dave & Amanda, Dave & Jeni, Casey & Siobhan, Jimmy & Julie and Rob & Angie. Cheers!
