It was last October when I officially met David & Claire at Kelly & Kevin’s wedding in Raleigh, NC. So cool, so chill, and Claire had this big smile that’s just so happy. It followed her all the way to the Outer Banks of NC, to Diva’s Day Spa the morning of her wedding. All the girls were there, and Claire’s mom too – hair, makeup; chill, relaxed. Both the photos from the spa show the pace of this part of the morning. I like Claire’s zen moment you see in the second photo.
We headed over the house in Duck where the girls got ready and where the ladies from Bell’s and Whistle’s put together the flowers. Take note of shots 5,6,7 of Claire in her dress. I made use of the long hall leading up to the room where she was getting dressed to provide a different perspective of the moment. When you combine the long lens and the great light coming from the window on the right of the frame; along with Claire’s gorgeous figure, beautiful smile and a great dress draping her perfectly, you get some great photos. There are a quite a few in this series, and I thought these three would give a nice flavor both in composition and in the mood at the moment. Take note of the closeup smile with her necklace and the nice moment with her mom helping her dress.
The ceremony itself was held at the Corolla Chapel, which is a great, intimate church just off the main road. Thumbs up to the priest who came all the way in from DC, I believe, to be here just for Claire & David. He was peaceful, yet lighthearted, and offered several nice one liners which got good laughs.
Here is where I first met the great Brenda and Hayley of To Have and to Hold OBX Wedding Planners. They were simply awesome. So happy and relaxed, they had the whole day under control. Personal plug, if you need a planner, definitely call them. They’re based in OBX but go all over NC and VA.
Post ceremony we stopped at the Kitty Hawk Pier for some great family and bridal party shots. This took me back to last year’s wedding with Josh & Lia, and it was nice to use the same space in a completely different way. Thanks go out to a mystery guy on the pier for giving us access and holding people away from us, and also thanks to the mystery guy who was chillin’ on his chair, who kindly moved to give us space for the roughly 15 minutes we were there. There were about 10-15 shots in this series, all under the pier, which you can see one here. It was a great idea, and to keep on schedule, we limited the photos to this one spot. By not going elsewhere on the beach allows us to focus (no pun intended lol) on getting beautiful photos in the one location, while maintaining our schedule without making people have to work to get different shots too fast. Remember, this is a wedding, not a photoshoot :)
Duck Woods Country Club is an awesome club, with a beautiful two room setup that offers great dimension, without it feeling like there are 2 rooms. My highlight here was being surprised to see the most awesome band, The Design. One of the best bands around (I don’t say that lightly!) I had rocked hard with these guys/gals back in October 2010 at Michael & Jamie’s wedding at Fearrington Village in Chapel Hill. The Design really, really knows how to not only get the guests into the wedding, but they totally rock, and rock hard. It’s more like a private concert than just having a band at your wedding.
Two highlights from the reception. Claire is secretly in a band and no one knows it. Seriously, I think she spent more time on stage at the mic than anywhere else – and it was kick-___! David wasn’t left out either, as he let out his rocker spirit too. In addition, Claire’s cousin (I think it was her cousin) got on stage, and they gave him a guitar, and he rocked out 2 songs, including, wait for it – yes, Stairway to Heaven. As the infamous first few notes came out, the band looked over at him in shock (all I can think of is Wayne’s World) and they were like “go with dude”. Next think you know, it was the lady who’s sure that all that glitters is gold, the drums kick in, and Kat is wailing with with crowd supporting her. (Kat is the lead singer). Also note the last photo with Bryan (drums/vocals of the band) giving Claire a heartfelt hug – when was the last time you saw such a connection from the band & the Bride & Groom – very cool.
Seriously, it’s been one rocking wedding after the next these past couple of months and this was a perfect way to close out the 8th weekend in a row of weddings. There are a lot of concert style reception photos, but really, that’s the way it was, a private concert, and it was awesome. Special notes, it was awesome hanging out with the bridal party, awesome props to Kelly R. (we’ll be rocking again in 2 months in DC woohooo!), way cool to work with Brenda and Hayley the wedding planners, the entire band The Design – you guys rock and rock hard, we’re going on the road next year, and also to the great vendors listed below.
Claire, David you guys know how to do it, what an awesome wedding! Thank you for having me, now let’s check out those photos.
Cheers!
