Rick & Marian’s wedding at the Milton Rhodes Center in Winston-Salem, NC
I first met Marian a couple of years ago while working with local NPR affiliate WFDD. I’ve gotten to know most of the hard working staff quite well, and have gained new appreciation for the dedication which goes into putting together what is an awesome radio station. This August morning…
I first met Marian a couple of years ago while working with local NPR affiliate WFDD. I’ve gotten to know most of the hard working staff quite well, and have gained new appreciation for the dedication which goes into putting together what is an awesome radio station.
This August morning started off unusually foggy, but helped create our first image of the Milton Rhodes Center. (The Milton Rhodes Center is the relatively new addition to the Sawtooth Center in downtown Winston-Salem. A fantastic new location with an art museum and theater production facility). The second photo shows the well known architectural roof lines of the Sawtooth Center. If you follow that image to image #5 of Marian getting ready, you’ll see those lines duplicated by the shadowing of the ceiling spot lights.
Image #7 is of Marian’s dad waiting for his time to walk her down the isle. He was only there for a few seconds, but his position is perfect. It seems as though he is under the light, and the lines of the columns, walls and door frames all parallel him nicely.
Of course, you have to love the next image, #8, with Marian and her two bridesmaids. The hug and the clasped smile show so much excitement and happiness, that one get a true sense of wedding happiness. It’s also a nice glimpse into a private moment guests rarely see.
Image #13 came about by moving to an unexpected location. This was taken from a service hallway at the back of the room. This is the moment when Rick is pulling his vows from his jacket pocket. The door and hallway are framing the image on the left and right, and they work great with the lines from the framing on the large windows. I also like the slight angle of the photo, as it adds a bit of motion to the emotional moment when a man has to declare his vows.
Photos 17 & 18 were taken from a perimeter balcony which goes around the room. It’s also a nice and difference perspective to the day. #17 offers a great play on light and shadow and #18 is a great moment with Rick and a guest.
I included #19 because it continues the ongoing theme of lines, light and shadow. It most closely resembles #7 of Marian’s dad standing. In this case, it’s only one of seven color photos in the series. I enjoy taking photos which challenge the viewer to recall where the image was taken, and wonder if there is someone who can point out where and how this was taken.
We ended the day with a small, romantic tour of the art on display at the museum and took a great series of photos with Rick and Marian enjoying a bit of time alone before heading off on their honeymoon.
I had a fantastic time with Rick, Marian and their families; as well as seeing all my friends from WFDD. Cheers to Rick & Marian!
