I met Jay & Liz last year at Kelly & Kevin’s wedding in Chapel Hill and was so happy they asked me to be part of their wedding. This whole group of friends are so cool and so fun I knew it would be a fantastic wedding. It was a full weekend, starting with a Friday rehearsal dinner in Old Alexandria at Landini Brother’s. We followed with a Saturday morning getting ready session at the retro chic Hotel Monaco and the ceremony and reception on the Potomac overlooking all of DC at Indigo Landings.
Looking through these photos we start at the Hotel Monaco and some shots of Liz’s fantastic shoes and great dress. I’d call attention to the shoes to notice the mix of straight lines, circles, and curves, with lines leading out of the frame both on top and bottom. As expected there are several observation photos starting with the dress. The dress clearly is the focal point, but the shadowed lines on the left of the frame and lighter door on the left do a nice job of helping compose and bring the viewer in to what is ultimately a peaceful moment for one of the main characters in a wedding, which is the dress. The next three photos of Liz follow the same pattern showing great moments, starting with friends reliving old times through a photobook gift they gave Liz, followed by makeup and a toast.
Liz & Jay had a first look along the docks of the Indigo Landing. I enjoy the way the trees frame the photo showing Liz’s sister fixing her dress as Jay waits patiently. We chose this location not only for it’s natural beauty but also because Jay proposed to Liz under a tree and it was naturally fitting for their first look.
The next photo with Jay kissing Liz is great, simply because you can see how happy Liz is. Normally I wouldn’t have tilt in a photo where you have such a clear horizon with a city in the background, but in this case I think it works, because it emphasizes a bit of motion and dynamics which come naturally to both of them and the moment.
Lines come to play heavily again starting with Jay waiting to walk down the aisle. The vertical lines of the umbrellas match that of the boat masts and using the railing to frame the heads of Jay, his mom and groomsmen add to the photo to make it much more interesting. Following that, the lines from the deck posts lead you to Liz standing with her parents and the same posts then balance out the bridal party waiting to come down the aisle.
The very next shot should be noted simply for the emotion Jay is expressing at being presented Liz with her parents and his mom next to him. Perhaps one of the most intimate moments of the day.
Moving into the reception, I make note of one of my favorite photos of the blog – a B&W of Liz kissing her grandmother. It was a great moment, and there is so much going on here. From the way her grandmother is holding Liz’s head and wrapping her arm around her back, to the genuine kiss Liz is giving, to the people in the background. The guy wearing sunglasses is awesome, the lady wearing glasses looking on, and so on.
Naturally, you’re wondering about Spiderman. I’ve debated revealing his identity, but, you know, it just wouldn’t be the same. I will say that the old school Spidey theme was playing loud over the speakers, and that this is probably the greatest wedding crasher ever.
We wish Jay & Liz all the best as they take on year 1. Cheers!
